First, beware of putting any personal information on line, even in THIS format. This is a train wreck waiting to happen.

Best way to edit something is to put yourself in the role of the employer. What would you, IF you were hiring, consider too much or too little. Next, take a trip to the library or your local unemployment bureau. Lots of free resources on resume writing and interviewing.

One of the best books on overall business tactics is “Smart Moves” By Sussman & Deep. Loads of good stuff. Amazon has it, as well as a bunch of great business books. So does the library.

As one resume workshop leader told us: “The BEST Resume is the one that gets you the job!” Also, keep in mind that we are in a recession sliding into a depression. It is a brief cover letter, a two page resume which can be quickly updated or changed to meet the job that you are applying for, that will get you in the interview door.

One other thing. If you attend church, or a house of worship, check with some members of your congregation. They may be able to help you as well. Prayer and Bible study is also recommended to give you a true perspective as to where the Lord would want you to go. On my new job, I’ve run into more than a few people who been on ‘dry spells’ or ‘downsized’ because of the economy for one or two years. Keep the faith! Some job is better than no job.

What home workout machine will provide the best aerobic and anaerobic full-body excercise?

My boyfriend is a very fit fellow, 22 years old, about 6' and 170-185 lbs. He has been involved in martial arts for most of his life, and used to run track and bike. Recently, his lifestyle has become a little more stagnant and he is worried about blood pressure and cardiac health, as well as becoming more toned up and building muscular strength and endurance, as he has recently become a firefighter. The workout equipment at the station isn't fantastic, so he wants to make a purchase (preferably under $800, realistically more like under $500).

So far, he really likes the idea of getting a rowing machine (the fan resistance type), which seems like a great full-body muscular and cardio workout. But is it a machine that will provide him the best range and combination of benefits? In other words, is there another machine type out there that will give him a cardio workout and work more of his muscle groups than rowing?
I don't think an elliptical would work his upper body enough…I've run on an elliptical before, and it's nice because of the low impact aspect, but it's not the full-body workout he's looking for.

Hi, Andrea!

The short answer is, "It depends!"

The best solution for him may be a rowing machine. Rowing is a terrific overall exercise. It's possible to get very fit using just a rowing machine.

On the other hand, there's no one perfect exercise that will do everything. (Swimming comes close, but it, too, has drawbacks.)

For this reason, it's best to do the three different kinds of exercise, namely, intense cardio, mild cardio, and strength training.

Mixing them up can save time, but, since nothing will be done well, it's a false economy. It's not just a good idea for him to maintain a high degree of cardiovascular fitness and strength, as a fireman it could well save his life.

Perhaps he could get one type of exercise using the equipment already available at the fire station and get the other types at home. Here are a couple of examples that might work well.

If there is a stationary bike at his fire station, all it would take is two workouts of 3 minutes each (excluding warm-ups and cool-downs) to get all the intense cardio he needs–and it would be easy to get more if he wanted a higher degree of cardiovascular fitness.

At the bottom of this reply, I have listed a link to a free Internet resource that explains exactly how to do this.

(At that resource there are also free strength training programs and weightlifting exercises.)

He could get sufficient mild cardio simply by going for a four-mile walk in just under an hour several times a week.

That would leave strength training. Two strength sessions weekly at home would be sufficient.

It's possible to get some good buys on used equipment (such as an Olympic bar, a bench, and a power rack) from local newspapers, estate sales, eBay, or when a gym goes out of business.

For example, if there is sufficient equipment for strength training at his fire station, then he could add in the mild cardio at home by walking.

To get sufficient intense cardio, he could buy a single piece of equipment that would work well for just that purpose. A rowing machine would be an excellent choice–or a stationary bike or any similar piece of standard aerobic equipment. The key is to try it before purchasing it.

For $5 or so (and sometimes a trial is free), a local gym with lots of different machines will sell him a single workout that would enable him to try them.

Go for quality. It's possible, for example, to purchase an excellent stationary bike for under $500 and it's possible to purchase a junk one for $300.

If he doesn't try a specific brand before purchasing, at least check out objective reviews (such as those in "Consumer Reports") in advance.

In other words, maximize the equipment that is already available to him and think long term. Unfortunately, there is no one piece of equipment that will do everything.

Instead, put together a home gym piece by piece. If you plan carefully and select wisely, that equipment will give you decades of use.

I hope this information helps you, Andrea.

All my best wishes.
